FAQs

What is Bachata?

Bachata is another form of Latin dance with a different basic step from salsa. As with our salsa classes, we begin with the fundamentals and emphasize proper technique.

Do I need a partner?

No, we rotate partners during the class. This is especially beneficial when you’re just learning because if you stay with one partner, you tend to adapt to his or her bad habits. If you’re a couple and really don’t want to dance with anyone else, you’re not required to rotate but as stated, it may affect your progress.

What is a Lead? What is a Follow?

Salsa is a partner dance where one person leads by initiating the moves and one follows. Men are traditionally leads and women follows but you’re free to choose which role to learn. Many of the best dancers learn both. In fact, in the 2009 Mayan Salsa Competition in LA, two men won first place!

Can I take both Salsa and Bachata together?

Yes, in fact that’s why we scheduled them back to back. Salsa clubs play a mix of both Salsa and Bachata. We intentionally structured the salsa classes directly next to the Bachata classes so you can take both together if you want. Bachata will also help you learn salsa faster by teaching body isolation and connection. And it’s double the fun!

Do you offer referral discounts?

Yes, we offer $10 off your next series for current students who refer a friend to sign up for at least one 4-Class Combo series. Be sure to tell your friend to let us know who referred them. This can be done in person, in the comments box when registering online, or via email to registration@salsaymotion.com. Then, when you register for your next series, you will get a sweet little discount!

I’m not sure what class to take.

If you’re undecided between two levels, say for instance Salsa Basics and Intermediate Salsa, make arrangements to come a few minutes early and one of our instructors will take you for a “test spin”. We’ll make sure you’re in the most appropriate class for your skill level.

Do I need to register for the whole series?

For level 1, we recommend this as our classes are structured so that one class builds upon the next. However, you can generally catch up if you miss the first class because we review much of the material in class 2. For levels 2 and above, drop- ins are always welcome at $25 for one class or $35 for two classes (within the same day), or $45 for 3+ classes for an evening (excludes teams, special workshops, and festivals.)

What should I wear and bring?

Come with dance shoes (read below for details) and comfortable clothes. Don’t wear street shoes that can mar or damage the dance floors. If you’re taking the basics class, you can get by with sneakers that are not worn outside, but dance shoes will be more comfortable and easier to practice in. Both our studios have water fountains and restrooms.

What is your refund policy?

There are no refunds or guaranteed make-ups for missed classes. If you are registered for a series and need to reschedule, please contact us 48 hours before the first class to postpone your series. If you are sick and need to miss a class, you can do a make-up class during the same series at one of the alternate class offerings. Class make-ups do not transfer into the next series. Missed pop-up workshops or festivals are not eligible for refunds or make-ups.

Yes, we offer 3 different packages for wedding dance choreographies that include a choreo, private lessons, practice videos, and your music cut. See CLASSES – Wedding Packages for prices and details.
